The amount of dead habitancy keeps on increasing. Iligan and Cagayan are in the state of calamity says Mayor Cruz.The survivors were able to save their lives by climbing to the roof. A 6-month old baby is still missing." This news from Dxic (a local radio station) woke me up from my deep sleep. My mum was walking nearby the house and my neighbors were in panic.
Everybody was in turmoil and I could barely believe what happened. When the news mentioned Cagayan, I went to a shock. I was just there yesterday, I told myself. I hurriedly went to our nearest cathedral church and met up with my friends who were gathering to help the victims of Typhoon Sendong. I managed to give some of my used apparels and offered help. The whole city was deranged because of the incident. A friend of mine was still missing. The city smelled dead habitancy (literally). "This is like Nagasaki thrown with an atomic bomb. The place smells dead families with scavengers nearby the corner" says, Sam, a friend of mine who worked at a local radio news station.
Is this a second chance?
Take Faye Ermac, 22 years old and one of the survivors. A good friend of mine. Faye and I once studied in Mindanao State University - Iligan establish of Technology. She was my classmate and known for being extrovert yet kind. I could hardly believe that such a frail woman would ever take the courage to break their ceiling and climb to the roof. I managed to have a conversation with her a week after the incident.
"We were sleeping but my father noticed something unusual. He woke up but, just as he was about to rise from his bed, the water was rapidly rising." She said.
"As luck would have it, you have survived." I replied.
"Yes, we managed to survive because we broke our ceiling and went straight to the roof. We could not do whatever to save our things. What we had in mind was just to save ourselves." She continued.
"The roof served as our refuge. When we were all in the roof, we could see some of our neighbors drifted by the flood together with their daughters and their house. I could not believe what I saw. We were crying except my father who was precisely considered to save us all." She talked while carrying her bag full of clothes and food.
I could still sense the stressing perceive she had as I looked at her eyes. Before, I view that Typhoon was something that whatever could just read on textbooks and news papers but, not until I talked with Faye and saw dead bodies carried in trucks.
"But, my two nephews did not make it." Her voice suddenly gave chill to my toes.
"They were just 7 and 9 years old. My nephews were at my uncle's house. Maybe, if they were with us, they would have survived. Too young to pass away. It breaks my heart to know that my nephews died because of the flood. They were cute but, they left us." She said.
I did not want to continue the conversation anymore. I could not even look at her eyes again. It was like I felt the same lost. After the conversation, we departed ways and thanked God. Me and my family were not affected by the flood.
For some reasons, I could still say that I am lucky. After losing my small firm and contract, I am well aware that I am one of the luckiest personel who have stepped the world. As for my friend Faye, I could implicit that she is pondering in her heart and asking: is this a second chance?
